In what was an extraordinary team effort, Hit103.1 Townsville and Triple M Townsville 102.3 have been praised for the constant, vital information and support they provided for listeners impacted by Tropical Cyclone Kirrily.
The coverage provided from the joint broadcast across both radio stations delivered a consistent, credible information flow to the local Townsville community and the communities of Far North Queensland.
During Tropical Cyclone Kirrily, Hit103.1 Townsville and Triple M Townsville 102.3 provided five days of emergency coverage including 29 hours of commercial-free live broadcasting.
SCA News and Content team members stayed overnight at the station while the cyclone crossed, working tirelessly on emergency broadcasting both prior to and post the cyclone. In addition, staff from SCA’s Rockhampton, Gold Coast and Brisbane news teams provided extra support.
Following the cyclone, a heatwave was declared, and the community was faced with the prospect of up to seven days without power and for some, water.
The Triple M Townsville and Hit Townsville teams quickly organised a pallet of bagged ice from Artic Ice and took time out of their weekend to give it to those in need.
SCA’s Head of Regional Content Blair Woodcock says “I couldn’t be prouder of the news and content teams involved in the broadcasts, along with amazing support from many other SCA teams around the country.”
“Our amazing and talented people demonstrated an unwavering dedication to provide a service even while their own families and homes were at risk of the cyclone.”
