To mark International Women’s Day on the 8th March Scala Radio has a selection of programmes that celebrate inspiring women within classical music.
On International Women’s Day itself, Scala Radio will celebrate Inspirational Women in Music from 9am to 10pm starting off with an all-women composers Screen Time, an hour of music from films, TV shows and video games, with Charles Nove showcasing music by the likes of Lena Raine, Anne Dudley, Doreen Carwithen and Angela Morley.
Presenters Mark Forrest, Sam Hughes, Penny Smith and Hannah Cox will continue to celebrate women composers and inspirational women performers across the day and into the evening.
Musicians and conductors will be invited to introduce their recordings, sharing their memories of performing the music and offering advice for young women seeking a career in music.
In Drive, Penny Smith will be joined by soprano Gabriella di Laccio, the founder and curator of DONNE, Women in Music, a charitable foundation that aims to make positive change and to readdress the gender inequality within the music industry and beyond.
More special programmes will air around the day too, from March 5th to 27th.
