Salem Media Group has announced a series of upper level executive changes as company founders Edward Atsinger III and Stuart Epperson prepare to move into new roles.
Atsinger, who had served as CEO since its founding, will shift to the newly created role of Executive Chairman assuming leadership of the board of directors while providing oversight and guidance to both the CEO and COO. The company states that Atsinger will continue to be engaged full-time and focus more of his attention on macro strategy and planning, M&A, external relationships, government affairs and leadership development.
Epperson, who has held the Chairman’s role for all of Salem’s history, will resign from the Board of Directors on January 1 and move into the position of Chairman Emeritus. His son Stuart Epperson Jr., who heads Delmarva Educational Association, Truth Broadcasting, and Chesapeake-Portsmouth Broadcasting, will join the board in his place.
Salem has promoted David Santrella from President of Broadcast Media to Chief Executive Officer. Santrella joined Salem in 2001 as GM of the company’s Chicago cluster gaining oversight of Milwaukee as well in 2003. In 2008, he was promoted to Operational Vice President overseeing Colorado Springs, Denver, and Minneapolis and then President of the Radio Division in 2010. In 2015 he moved into his now current role adding oversight of Salem Radio Network, Salem Media Representatives, and some digital assets.
David Evans will rise to Chief Operating Officer of Salem. Evans joined the company in 2000 as SVP/Chief Financial Officer. He rose to EVP/Business Development in 2005 and has been President of New Media since 2007.

These changes reflect the Board’s ongoing succession planning and are designed to provide leadership continuity as the company continues to execute its strategic initiatives.
Since founding Salem in 1974, Mr. Atsinger, along with his brother-in-law Mr. Epperson, has grown the company from a single radio station into America’s leading multimedia company specializing in Christian and conservative content. He has been a driving force in Salem’s mission to serve the Company’s audiences nationwide with content that is unavailable through mainstream media channels. As Executive Chairman, Mr. Atsinger will be chairman of the Board, assuming leadership of the board of directors while providing oversight and guidance to both the CEO and COO. Mr. Atsinger will continue to be engaged full-time and focus more of his attention on macro strategy and planning, M&A, external relationships, government affairs and leadership development. This will allow the company to continue to benefit from Mr. Atsinger’s decades of experience and skills.
