Saga Communications has surrendered the license for Oldies “Joy 1230” WJYI Norfolk VA.
WJYI has been operating via STA since September 2019 when the company demolished and rebuilt the tower that housed the AM and sister “FM 99” WNOR Norfolk. Since that time the station has been utilizing a temporary vertical whip antenna with 157 watts as opposed to its licensed 630 watts. At the time of its last extension filing in March, Saga stated that the ground radial system was damaged during the construction of the new tower pausing installation of the folded unipole skirt antenna for the AM until the ground system was repaired.
Since the STA period began, the station had been branding as “Joy FM 98.7 HD2“. Saga also swapped the station’s call letters in April, moving 1230’s WJOI calls to their “Joy 1340” in Milwaukee and bringing the WJYI calls to Norfolk.
The station had signed on as WNOR in May of 1949. It had taken the WJOI call letters when it flipped to Adult Standards in 1999. Saga retains WNOR-FM and Classic Rock “106.9 The Fox” WAFX Suffolk in the Norfolk market.
