After over 30 years at Saga Communications Classic Rock “Rock 102” WAQY Springfield MA, and in mornings with Steve ‘Bax’ Baxter for the past 26, John O’Brien has been let go from the station.
O’Brien told the Springfield Republican that he was let go on January 21 while seeking mental health treatment after a medical leave. He told the newspaper that he had developed a somewhat fraught relationship with the parent company after several bouts with cancer, and seeking accommodations to broadcast the show remotely from his second home in Florida during the winter months.
Saga Springfield General Manager told the Republican, “We don’t comment on personnel issues for the privacy of our employees,” but confirmed that O’Brien is no longer with the company.
Bax and producer Steve Nagle remain on the renamed “Rock 102 Morning Show”.
