Rookwood Sound joins DAB and evolves into a health and well-being radio station

Hospital radio service Rookwood Sound is evolving into a health and well-being service and joining DAB in Cardiff.

The station held a marathon broadcast over the weekend to mark the changes, and to celebrate 36 years on-air next week.

Stephen Allen, Chief Executive of Rookwood Sound, said: “As health care changes as is the need to develop ourselves from the traditional Hospital Radio service with headphones at each bed towards a inclusive health and wellbeing service”.

He went on to say, after launching on the internet and now on DAB+ we will be able to provide a service to most people across Cardiff & Vale of Glamorgan and further a field. “We can act as a link between loved ones receiving care wherever they are and DAB+ provides us with that platform, along with the launch of our App in the next few weeks, it is an exciting time for our volunteers and listeners old and new.

“The station has been on air since 1987 and started at Rookwood Hospital, and following its closure we moved to our current home at the University Hospital Llandough and we are grateful for the continued support of the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board.”

Rookwood Sound is celebrating its 36 anniversary on 31 October 2023 which will see the service expand significantly, with new volunteers welcome to get in touch.
