A new “Southern Soul” show on Radio One Classic Hip Hop “99.5/102.7 The Box” 950 WXGI/99.5 W258DC Richmond and 1240 WTPS/102.7 W274BX Petersburg VA came to a quick end after host Preston Brown made anti-semitic comments about the leader of a civic group opposing parent company Urban One and Churchill Downs’ proposed Richmond Grand Resort and Casino up for vote next week.
WTVR-TV reports that on Wednesday’s show, Brown said Paul Goldman “is a Jew who got the same trait as Judas. He’s a white Jew with the background of Judas.” Audio of Brown’s comments and other recent comments made by Radio One founder Cathy Hughes on Gospel “Praise 104.7” WPZZ were archived on a website campaigning against the approval of the casino on Election Day.
On a now deleted page on The Box website, Brown’s show was described as a one week special, “Hey RVA! All week long, you’re invited to put a little soul in your life, courtesy of Preston Brown. Brown’s unique style of blending Soul, Classic R&B, and of course, Southern Soul, makes the listeners feel an emotional connection to the show.” Brown previously was co-owner, General Manager and a host on 1450 WCLM Richmond and later hosted on 990 WREJ in the market.
Radio One Richmond RVP Marsha Landess released a statement today, “The anti-Semitic comments heard on The Box, 99.5 were made by a temporary guest host who was not an employee of the station. These statements were horrible and offensive. Once we heard the comments and because he was alone in the studio with his producer, I personally drove to the station and immediately removed him from the show. He will not be appearing again. Our CEO, Alfred Liggins, has personally apologized to Mr. Goldman on behalf of the station and our company, and we again sincerely apologize to Mr. Goldman for these remarks and condemn them in the strongest possible terms.”
