Radio General celebrates 65 years of hospital radio in Warrington

Radio General is celebrating 65 years of providing music and entertainment to the Warrington Hospital.

The station will broadcast live all day on its birthday – 7th November – and again on Saturday 12th November when it goes live from 6am till 5pm playing 65 years of number 1 songs.

Radio General will open its doors to visitors, past members, and people who are interested in joining the team from 10am to 5pm.

The service was started by the Warrington Council of Youth in 1957 and was named the Warrington Hospital Request Broadcasting Scheme. When it started it had two live request shows a week.

During the 60s the name was changed to the present name of Radio General. After a period of inactivity, it was relaunched in December 1973.

The station has been broadcasting from the present Keith Inman Studios since 2001 and now broadcasts 24 hours a day with a mixture of live, recorded programmes and a Myriad of Music. Rugby commentaries from the Warrington Wolves & Widnes Vikings games are also broadcast. Since 2017, Radio General has been available online at radiogeneral.co.uk or via the Tune-In app.
