England v Ireland: Four key battles at Twickenham

Maro Itoje v Joe McCarthy

Potentially box-office. Itoje and James Ryan had built a spicy rivalry but it could be nothing compared to this. The all-court England lock and McCarthy, the young tyro, love to mix it and they will be going head on for each other here.

Tadhg Furlong v Ellis Genge

Ireland’s scrum struggled here two years ago with Furlong and Andrew Porter frustrated participants. However the Leinster tighthead has been in superb form in recent weeks and the visitor’s scrum will be out for revenge.

George Ford v Jack Crowley

England’s George Ford tackles Jack Crowley of Ireland in the 2023 Six Nations clash at the Aviva Stadium

This is Ford’s 92nd England cap and just Crowley’s 13th – and while it is the Corkman’s first Twickenham taster there doesn’t feel like a massive gap between them. In a season of firsts for Ireland’s out-half he can dominate this duel.

Hugo Keenan v George Furbank

A massive boost for Ireland to have Keenan back and he will provide that safe pair of hands that will be vital against England’s predictable aerial bombardment. Furbank’s selection ahead of Freddie Steward remains a strange call.
