The Donnie Simpson Show will exit Radio One Adult R&B “Majic 102.3/92.7” WMMJ Bethesda MD/Washington DC and WDCJ Prince Frederick MD on Friday, January 12.
Simpson made the announcement on-air today with co-host Tony Perkins reiterating that neither of them are retiring. The 69 year-old Radio Hall of Famer has been with WMMJ since August 2015. Perkins, a longtime Washington area and Good Morning America meteorologist, has co-hosted the show since January 2018. He has also been hosting a national weekend show for Radio One’s Reach Media.
Simpson began his career in his native Detroit at 97.9 WJLB at the age of 15. He would first arrive in Washington in 1977 as Program Director of 93.9 WKYS where he would then guide the station from Disco to Urban Contemporary and then took over mornings. He would jump to 95.5 WPGC in 1993 and remain their until 2010. Simpson also hosted “Video Soul” on BET from 1983 until 1997 and a weekly talk show “Donnie After Dark” on TV One in 2016/17. “Video Soul” was resurrected for a six episode run on BET’s streaming service BET+ last summer.
We’re told that Reach Media’s DL Hughley Show will supplant Simpson in afternoons.
