Youngest ever radio station manager runs Fun Kids spin-off

Fun Kids has launched a new spin-off pop-up service and hired 10-year-old Martha Sheehan to run it.

Martha is managing Fun Kids Space Station, which launched on the morning of June 8, 2024, during a special sleepover event held by Fun Kids at the National Space Centre in Leicester.
It will air on DAB Digital Radio in Leicester and the Fun Kids app for the next month and focuses on space and space exploration, aimed at kids between 6 and 12 years old.
10-year old Martha has been planning the content for months and in May visited the Fun Kids UK radio studios to put her plans into action. Martha curated space themed features, the spacey music playlist and fun galactic games, facts and competitions.
Martha was hands-on in the whole process recording the features, jingles and adverts, whilst Fun Kids DJ Bex showed her how to work the studio equipment and how to line up a radio show.

Fun Kids Content Controller James Lloyd said: “We like to put young people in the driving seat. They have the most creative ideas. So when we thought about launching a space radio station just for kids, we needed someone who knew what our audience wanted to hear, and we couldn’t have been more pleased with the job Martha has done.”
After pushing the red button to launch the radio station Martha beamed and said the whole experience had been ‘Awesome’.
Craig Glenday, Editor in Chief at Guinness World Records said: “The talent and dedication of our record holders never ceases to amaze us. Martha took her role as the Fun Kids Space Station Manager very seriously and did the most incredible job – simply out of this world! Congratulations Martha, you have a fantastic future ahead of you and we are proud to have you in our record breaking family.” […]

Ofcom approves request to change B Radio Key Commitments

Ofcom has agreed to approve changes to the Key Commitments of B Radio in Farnborough.

The station wanted to appeal to an older demographic and remove the requirement to broadcast travel news.
B Radio, operated by Rush FM Limited, will now target under-40s who live, work and study in Farnborough and surrounding areas instead of under-30s.
It will now play mainstream music from the 1990s to present day, with some music from the 1980s.
B Radio can also reduce its original output requirement from 84 hours per week to 44 hours per week, and reduce its locally-produced output requirement from 42 hours per week to 30 hours per week.
B Radio in Reading also changed its Key Commitments last year to reduce local and original hours to a similar level.
Ofcom ran a four week consultation and received zero responses, so has just announced the changes have been approved. […]

Community station Radio Tircoed to rebrand as Swansea Live Radio

Some of the former Swansea Sound team are getting together to launch Swansea Live Radio on the frequency of Radio Tircoed.

Swansea Live will launch at 7am on Monday 30th September, a date associated with Wales’ first local commercial radio station.
The station will broadcast live and local programmes from studios in Tircoed Village which has been the home of community station Radio Tircoed since 2007.
Swansea-born commercial and BBC radio presenter Shaun Tilley will be station and programme director, and will also host the weekday breakfast show as he did when The Wave launched in 1995.
Shaun told RadioToday: “If ever there was a city that needs truly local radio it is Swansea. I have been fortunate to work all over the UK in my career but this is my town, I was born and bred here plus I know it like the back of my hand.
“This place is unique, the people are special and we are proud of our incredible heritage. We will be giving the city back a truly local station with live and interactive programmes from studios based in the community. Put simply, we will be from Swansea, for Swansea.”
The station will have a number of former Swansea Sound and Wave names on its line up including Steve Dewitt, Siany, Leighton Jones, Plastic Sam, Mark Powell, Chris Smith, Griff Harries, Rob Pendry, James Lewis, Kevin King and the city’s first ever voice on local radio 50 years ago, Chris Harper.
Presenters from the former community station Radio Tircoed will also host shows including a Welsh language programme, specialist music and a more eclectic mix of quality tracks at night.
Swansea Live says it will also air what’s on information and a community billboard whilst also supporting local charities.
Beginning at 7am on Monday 30th September, the station will be heard across Swansea online at swansealiveradio.co.uk and on 106.5 FM in Tircoed Village.
The station is also planning to be available on small-scale DAB in the future. “I feel as excited as I did when I hosted the first show on The Wave 29 years ago” says Shaun. “And we are beyond grateful to the Tircoed Village Trust for their incredible support.
“We look forward to giving them and Swansea as a whole, a truly local station it can be proud of once again.” […]

Premier pays tribute to its Chief Executive Peter Kerridge

Premier Radio Chief Executive Peter Kerridge has died following a year-long battle with acute leukaemia.

Peter passed away surrounded by family and loved ones in the early hours of Saturday morning (8th June).
The radio station is in mourning following the news, and has opened a book of condolences on its website.
A statement from the Christian service said: “We are sad to announce that in the early hours of Saturday 8th June Peter Kerridge, Chief Executive of Premier passed away surrounded by family and loved ones.
“Whilst we mourn Peter’s passing, we are reminded of Thessalonians 4:13-14: “Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again, and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in him.
“Peter embodied a rare combination of vision, determination and warmth. He truly believed in the power of Christian media to inspire, enable and encourage. Under his leadership Premier has become a beacon of hope, reaching millions.
“Peter’s absence leaves a deep sadness in the hearts of everyone who knew him, but his unwavering dedication, sense of humour and kindness will live on in the countless lives he touched and transformed. So together, let’s celebrate the impact he had on all our lives and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.”
Peter launched Premier in 1995 after campaigning for a Christian radio station in the UK. He previously worked as Business Development Director at Essex Radio. […]
