Greg James will be on-air till 11am as the breakfast show gets extended in the new Radio 1 summer schedule.
The new timeslot starts on July 1st, when a few other changes also take place.
Greg says: “Being on the radio is pretty much my entire personality so why not do an extra half hour a day for all those who can’t be bothered waking up early for the Breakfast Show in the summer holidays.”
Additionally, Sam and Danni will cover Friday Early Breakfast (5am – 7am) from 5 July, until January 2025. The duo will keep the seat warm until the next wave of presenting talent will take the reins and the slot will resume to its normal format dedicated to showcasing the very best new and emerging presenting talent.
Sam and Danni will host Friday Early Breakfast alongside Weekend Breakfast (Saturdays and Sundays, 7am – 10am) with both shows broadcasting from Cardiff.
Later this summer Radio 1 will also launch a number of new shows on the BBC Sounds Radio 1 Dance stream. Arielle Free will host Radio 1 Dance Morning, which will launch on 15 July and be available Monday to Sunday. Danny Howard will present Radio 1’s Dance Party Warm Up, a weekly show available every Thursday (6pm – 8pm) getting listeners ready for the weekend.
Pete Tong will curate his Essential History of Dance a weekly show (Saturdays, 7pm – 8pm) dedicated to telling the story of the Dance genre. There will also be a new evening specialist series which will see Radio 1 Dance collaborate with key Dance music labels Defected Records, HE.SHE.THEY. and DnB Allstars.
In addition, Connor Coates will present a daily playlist – Radio 1 Dance – which will come from Northern Ireland, playing new, current and classic Dance tracks, and Charlie Hedges’ Radio 1 Dance Anthems will be streamed daily across afternoons.
It was also announced today that Martha will take over the station’s weekly Tuesday night show (11pm – 1am) which was previously hosted by the late Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale. Martha will continue Annie’s legacy in showcasing the biggest and best new Dance tracks in the world.
Martha has been supported by Annie and was one of the inaugural recipients of the Annie Nightingale Presents Scholarship, an initiative created by Annie Nightingale in 2021 focussed on celebrating and elevating talented women and non-binary people in the electronic music scene by providing them with a national platform to showcase their taste and expertise. Martha will be simulcast on the Radio 1 Dance stream.
Aled Haydn Jones, Head of BBC Radio 1, says: “The summer months see a change in routine for our young listeners and as a station, it’s important we acknowledge this and continue to cater to their needs. With that in mind, I’m pleased to introduce our new summer 2024 schedule which offers a variety of new shows and content as well as an extra thirty minutes of Radio 1 Breakfast! I can’t wait to tune in!”
