Austin City Limits Radio Resurrects Blues On The Green With City Partnership

Following the announcement of the cancellation of its annual “Blues on the Green” annual music festival last month, Waterloo Media AAA “Austin City Limits Radio” K246BD/KGSR-HD2 Austin has announced that the festival will return thanks to the passing of a resolution by the Austin City Council on Thursday.

The resolution will see the City of Austin co-sponsor the annual event with the following goals: maintain a “cherished Austin tradition without interruption”, ensure free access to the public, provide performance opportunities to a diverse array of local musicians, and require the observation of the city’s adopted musician pay scale.

KGSR has held Blues on the Green since the early 1990s as an annual free concert series produced by Event Production Services. The resolution’s passing will also see increased financial support from supermarket operator H-E-B to keep the event going.

ACL Radio’s Blues on the Green – presented by H-E-B is back on thanks to Austin City Council’s approval of Resolution 23 and H-E-B’s increased financial support to keep this iconic tradition and important cultural event open to the public in Zilker Park as planned. A special thanks to City Council member Natasha Harper-Madison, the co-sponsors for their work to make Resolution 23 a reality, and to the community who showed up to support the effort.

ACL Radio’s Blues on the Green is the largest FREE concert series in Austin. Beginning at the Arboretum in the early 90’s as a low-key affair drawing crowds in the hundreds, KGSR grew Blues on the Green into a signature, summer event drawing thousands per night. Now hosted at Zilker Park, the event draws tens of thousands of music lovers each summer. It is consistently ranked as a top annual Austin entertainment event, and has become a staple of the Austin lifestyle.

ACL Radio Program Director Lynn Barstow: “We’re thrilled that the people of Austin, the City, H-E-B and the countless other sponsors agree that Blues on the Green is an essential bit of what makes Austin the Live Music Capital of The World. We are so grateful to be able to continue this great, 30+ year tradition. See you in the park this summer!”

Heidi Anderson, Sr. Director of Public Affairs for Central Texas, H-E-B added, “H-E-B is committed to broadening exposure and access to the arts and performances for all Texans. ACL Radio’s Blues on the Green, presented by H-E-B is a cornerstone of Austin’s music culture, and we are proud to foster this public-private partnership to preserve this Austin tradition.”

We’ll be back with more info soon. In the meantime, thank you to everyone for your continued support.
