The ongoing cuts at Cumulus Media have seen the departure of longtime Huntsville AL Operations Manager Steve Smith after 20 years with the company.
Smith also served as PD/afternoon host of CHR 104.3 WZYP and PD of Classic Country “93.3 Nash Icon” WWFF during his nearly 16 year tenure in the market following a stint as PD of “Y102” WHHY Montgomery AL. The Houston native also worked at CHR “100.7 Mix-FM” WMGI Terre Haute IN from 1997-2003 including time as PD after holding on-air roles at multiple stations in his hometown including 104.1 KRBE. Smith can be reached at steveradioguy@yahoo.com.
Smith shared with RadioInsight, “Close to 16 years as PD of a heritage CHR has been quite the ride! I am happy to finish out on top as WZYP remains #1 in all key demos (all day long) including the money demo… Adults 25-54.
So many memories over the years…. My absolute favorite thing was helping people. I organized numerous storm relief drives as we filled up the WZYP box truck with items and drove to the tornado and flood ravished towns like Waverly, TN, Mayfield, KY and Rolling Fork, MS. Having a weather background, I always anchored and did live tornado/snow coverage on WZYP…. the way it should be…. not just playing tv audio.
Live radio serving the community. That’s what I did.
I will deeply miss all the connections with the listeners. They loved seeing my dog (unofficial WZYP mascot) Mr. Pickles at station events… and more recently… my 1 year old twin babies Chloe & Charlie. Listeners love dogs and babies. My secret weapon!”
