FCC Report 1/14: AM & LPFM Station Counts Drop

The FCC has issued its quarterly station count list showing continued drops in the number of AM, commercial FM, and LPFM totals, while total radio licenses is up due to the growth of non-commercial FMs.

40 AM licenses were turned in over the course of 2023 with 175 lost in the last five years. Ahead of the recent filing window, the number of LPFMs dropped by 48 last year down to 1967 current licenses down from its peak of 2172 in December 2018.

Two LPFM licensees were issued Notices of Apparent Liability for Forfeiture for failing to timely file license renewals proposing $1500 fines. Cascade Community Radio’s 101.1 KVRN-LP Portland OR and Spokane Translator Association’s 100.3 KVFS-LP Spokane WA were both granted one year license renewals in 2022 due to prolonged periods of silence during their previous terms and were required to file their next license renewal by October 1, 2023. Neither station did so until November 16, 2023.

Billboard expands in Asia with launch of Billboard Korea

Billboard is expanding its global footprint in Asia with the launch of Billboard Korea.The expansion, in partnership with Global Entertainment Media Group (GEMG), will be dedicated to the flourishing Korean music scene. Billboard Korea‘s first issue, Billboard K Vol.1, is scheduled for release in June.“We are thrilled to announce our expansion into Korea,” Billboard president Mike Van said in a statement. “Billboard has long celebrated the rich contribution of Korean music across our platforms. This expansion is a significant milestone for our brand and underscores our dedication to amplifying the voices and talent that shape the vibrant Korean music scene.”

Comrex Launches live web series “Tech Talk Live!”

Comrex is launching a new, live web series called “Tech Talk Live!” featuring Chris Crump, Senior Director of Sales & Marketing, as the host.The inaugural episode of “Tech Talk Live!” will be on Friday, January 19th, 2024 at 11 AM EST.
