From bookstore to broadcaster – Myoung Jae Yi

Five years ago, the Australian Film Television and Radio School (AFTRS) offered a Graduate Diploma in Radio which you could attend full and part time and only face to face. That diploma has shifted to include podcasting and now allows those who live regionally, perhaps have full time work, or young children, or limits around accessibility, the ability to still immerse themselves in radio, audio and sound production. People like Myoung Jae Yi.

FCC Report 11/5: License Cancelled For Never Operating From Licensed Site

License Cancellations
Ben Jordan Communications Corporation’s 91.9 WBRQ La Grange GA has been cancelled after not replying to an FCC inquiry. The commission noted that in May 2022, they received a complaint that WBRQ was operating from an unauthorized site which was confirmed by field agents that July. In July 2023, Crown Castle told the FCC that the company has no record that WBRQ ever operated at its licensed site since signing-on in 2011.

The FCC has has cancelled the license of New Beginnings Movement’s 990 WNAP Muncie IN after the licensee failed to respond to an inquiry stating that the station had been off the air or operating with unauthorized facilities since at least July 30, 2022.

Maria Guel’s Hispanic Family Christian Network has surrendered the licenses of three stations: 88.9 KRIQ-FM Richton MS, 91.7 KZYU-FM Wellton AZ, and 105.5 KZOB-FM O’Brien TX.

Brigham Young University – Idaho surrenders 103.9 K280EG Freedom WY.

FCC Actions

The FCC has issued a round of EEO audit letters to randomly selected radio and television stations. The list of stations being audited can be found here.

The FCC is issuing an Order to Pay or to Show Cause to Y2K LLC Hot AC “Q104.5” KSLQ-FM Washington MO over failure to pay delinquent regulatory fees and associated interest, administrative costs, and penalties owed from 2010 through 2023. The FCC states that KSLQ owes $25,893.90.

Philippines: Radio host shot dead during live broadcast

Juan Jumalon, a radio broadcaster in Mindanao, southern Philippines was shot dead in his studio while he was on air.Jumalon, 57, also known as DJ Johnny Walker was in his home-based 94.7 Gold FM Calamba studio, when a gunman entered the studio pretending to be a listener and shot him twice in the head.A video of the attack on the station’s Facebook page, where the broadcasts are also aired, shows Jumalon pausing and looking upward at something away from the camera before two shots ring out. He slumps back in his chair as background music plays on.

The attacker snatched his gold necklace before fleeing. Jumalon was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.The police said they were investigating a motive for the killing and were not aware of any previous threats against Jumalon’s life.Jumalon is the fourth journalist to be slain since President Ferdinand Marcos Jr took office in June 2022, and the 199th journalist to be killed in the country since 1986, the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) said, condemning “the brazen killing”.President Marcos Jr strongly condemned the shooting and said he had ordered the national police to track down, arrest and prosecute the killers.“Attacks on journalists will not be tolerated in our democracy and those who threaten the freedom of the press will face the full consequences of their actions,” Marcos said in a statement.With an average of three or four journalists murdered every year, the Philippines is ranked 147th out of 180 countries in RSF’s 2022 World Press Freedom Index.It is ranked seventh on CPJ’s most recent Impunity Index, which spotlights countries worldwide where journalists are slain and the killers go free.Photo: Facebook […]

The 2023 Community Radio Awards: The Winners

The 2023 Community Radio Awards were announced at a gala dinner held at the Adelaide Oval to wrap up the annual three day Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) conference. The Tony Staley Award for Excellence in Community Broadcasting went to NT station 8CCC with Benjamin Erin also winning the Station Leadership Award. 3CR’s Dr Juliet Fox won the Michael Law Award.
